Measuring Up for Your Door

1. Measure your existing door height, width and thickness.

2. Check that the door is square by measuring the door frame diagonally. If the frame is out of square, you may have to order a slightly larger door and trim it to size. A trimming allowance of up to 5mm is allowed on most doors.

3. Keep in mind that approximately 3mm clearance is required for the top and sides of the door and 5mm for the bottom, above the floor covering.

Tip: Convert Imperial to Metric by multiplying inches by 25.4. For example: 6' 8" = 80" x 25.4 = 2032mm
how to measure up for your new door

Hanging Your new Door

Step 1

Measure your present door including thickness. Then measure the door frame opening to make sure it is square. Approximately 3mm clearance is recommended at the top and side of the door and 5mm clearance above the floor covering. Check the hinges; you will need 3 x 100mm butt hinges for all entrance and solid construction doors.

Step 2

Prior to commencing any work check that your new door is the correct size. If you intend to reuse the door furniture (handle, etc) from the existing door, remove it carefully as you will have to use the old door as a template for installing the furniture.

Step 3

Remove the existing door by opening to access the hinges and place wedges underneath for support. Leaving one screw in the top hinge until last, remove all screws. Support the door when removing the final screw.

Step 4

If your existing door fits the opening, use it as a template for the trimming requirements of your new door. If not, compensate for any variation and transfer to the top of your new door and plane accordingly. Measure the length allowing necessary clearance and plane the bottom of the door. Stand the door in the opening. If it's too wide, butt the hinge side firmly into position, mark the overhang on the opening side and plane to fit.

Step 5

Mark the position of the hinges by transferring measurements from the jamb and check out with a chisel. If a new jamb is being used, mark and check out the hinge recess approximately 200mm from the top & bottom with a third recess in the centre. Drill screw holes and fasten hinges to the door. Stand the door in position supported by wedges and fix. Check that the door swings freely and clearance is satisfactory.

Step 6

Remove the door and apply your paint or stain to the top and bottom edges and hinge check outs. You may wish at this point to complete the painting or staining of the entire door, re-hanging your old door until you are ready.

Step 7

Re-hang you new door. Fit door furniture as per manufacturers instructions. Complete your painting or staining if you have not already done so.
